The Q-Rings reduce the detrimental effect of the dead center thanks to their oval shape. Why use round chainrings when the force you are able to apply over a pedaling cycle is not constant? When the neutral position is reached, the sprocket is on its smallest diameter, which makes it easier to shift more quickly and smoothly. As soon as you pass the dead center in the pedaling cycle, the diameter of the Q-Ring increases progressively, until it is at its largest when your muscles can deliver their maximum power.
Oval chainrings have already tried to make their way a few years ago, and have been widely criticized, but don't be fooled: the Rotor concept is exactly the opposite of its ovoid ancestors. In fact, some of the old egg-shaped chainrings offered maximum leverage at neutral (this concept only increased the stress on the muscles and was therefore the opposite of the QRINGS technology of ROTOR).
