Gravel frame bag, triangle and top tube

A gravel frame bag sits in the middle of the bike, carrying the heaviest items like tools, food, or a battery, without disrupting handling on trails. Choose the size based on your need for water: a half-frame to hold the bottles, a full triangle for maximum volume, or a top tube bag for easy access while riding, then check the attachment and waterproof rating.

Half-frame, full triangle or top tube: which format for gravel?

On a gravel bike, the question of format is mainly determined by that of water. The half-frame bag, attached under the top tube, leaves room for one or two bottles in the bottom of the triangle: this is the choice for long day trips and weekends with partial autonomy. The full triangle bag occupies the entire inside of the frame and offers the largest capacity of a bikepacking setup, at the cost of transporting water elsewhere.

The top tube bag, mounted on the top tube behind the stem, complements the other two: snacks, gels, phone or battery remain accessible without stopping, which matters during a long-distance event. Other small wedge-shaped bags can fit into the angle between the top tube and the seat tube.

Bottles and frame bags: keeping enough water

Before choosing a full triangle, check for other available locations. Many gravel forks have threaded inserts for bottle cages or cargo racks, and some frames add a third mount under the downtube, exposed to mud but useful for a spare bottle. If not, water travels in a hydration bag, which lightens the bike but loads the back.

With a half-frame bag, check that the bottle comes out without snagging: a side-entry bottle cage often resolves the issue on a small frame, where space under the bag quickly becomes limited.

Straps or threaded mounting: staying secure on trails

Hook-and-loop straps adapt to all frames and tighten in seconds. On bumpy tracks, a loaded bag can slip or pivot around the tube: wrap a strap around the head tube or downtube to secure it, and apply transparent protection strips at the contact points, as dust trapped under the straps wears the paint.

Some gravels have two threaded inserts on the top tube, behind the stem. A top tube bag mounted on these points won't move and won't touch the paint; check the spacing and the presence of these inserts before choosing a screw-on model. Whatever the attachment, keep a narrow profile: a bag that’s too thick rubs against the inside of your knees with every pedal stroke.

Rain, mud and dust: waterproof or water-resistant?

Waterproof bags combine welded fabric and a waterproof zipper: rain and water splashed by the front wheel stay outside, but the zipper is stiffer to operate. Water-resistant models, made of coated fabric and simply protected zips, can handle a downpour; in prolonged rain, slide your phone, papers and battery into a waterproof pouch inside. In both cases, brush off any sand from the zippers after a muddy outing to prevent them from seizing.

Completing your gravel bikepacking setup

The frame bag forms a trio with the gravel saddle bag, which holds light and bulky items, and the handlebar bag, perfect for a tent or sleeping bag. If you forego bottles, a hydration bag takes over. For a more loaded trip, the gravel rack accepts side bags. Frame bags for road and city are grouped in bike frame bags.

Brands of frame bags for gravel

Altura builds its Vortex Waterproof from welded fabric, secured with adjustable hook-and-loop straps; an external zipped pocket provides access to small items and reflective details make it visible from the side.

Evoc offers the Frame Pack WP, fully waterproof with welded seams and waterproof zips, split between a narrow side compartment and a main compartment; it can be strapped to the frame or screwed onto the inserts when available, and its protection strips are included.

Topeak reserves its FastFuel DryBag for the top tube: a hard shell with ultrasonic welding, closed by a waterproof zip, protects supplies and phone from the rain.

Acepac, a Czech bikepacking brand, makes its Zip Frame Bag in two lengths, 40 and 48 cm, to fit the size of the triangle; its coated Nylon fabric is water-resistant, and the brand recommends a waterproof pouch for electronics in prolonged rain.

Discounted gravel frame bags

End-of-line models go through road clearance, and newly arrived bags are listed in the new arrivals. The French Days or Black Friday allow you to complete your gear before a long-distance event.

Frequently asked questions

Which frame bag for a small gravel bike?

On a small frame, the triangle leaves little space once bottles are installed. A top tube bag and a short half-frame of about thirty centimeters are better suited than a full triangle. Measure the available length under the top tube before choosing.

Does a frame bag prevent carrying the bike on your shoulder?

A full triangle bag encloses the frame and requires carrying the bike differently when walking. A half-frame often leaves enough space to slide your shoulder or hand under the top tube, an advantage on routes that alternate between tracks and trails.

What to pack in a bikepacking frame bag?

Dense and heavy items: tools, pump, food, stove or power bank. Centrally located on the bike and close to the ground, they weigh the least on handling. Keep lighter items for the saddle and handlebar bags.

Can a top tube bag be screwed onto any gravel bike?

No, it requires two threaded inserts on the top tube, present on only some frames. Without them, strap mounting around the tube and stem works on all bikes.

Does a frame bag interfere with pedaling?

Not if it stays narrow and well secured. An overstuffed bag bulges outwards and rubs against the knees: choose a slim model, load it without overstuffing, and check for space around the knees during a first trial.
