MTB gear shifters: trigger or twist grip

22 products
22 of 22 products

An MTB gear shifter has to speak the same language as the derailleur it controls: the same brand, the same number of speeds, and the right side, right for the rear, left for the front. Then choose how it works in your hand, triggers under your thumb, twist grip or simple lever, and how it mounts, on the handlebar or on the brake lever. Shimano and Sram shifters from 6 to 12 speeds and spare parts are gathered here.

Triggers, twist grip or thumb lever?

The trigger shifter is the most common type on mountain bikes: your thumb pushes a first lever to move onto the larger sprockets, and a second lever releases the cable to come back down. At Shimano, most Rapidfire Plus shifters release with either the thumb or the index finger, and higher-end models shift several gears in a single movement. The twist grip, or Grip Shift at Sram, changes gear when you rotate part of the grip: it leaves your hands in place and suits children. Entry-level 6 or 7-speed mountain bikes often use a simple thumb lever, mounted on the handlebar.

Speeds, brand and side: the compatibility to check

An indexed shifter has a precise number of clicks: a 9-speed shifter operates a 9-speed derailleur, a 12-speed shifter a 12-speed drivetrain. Shimano and Sram do not use the same cable travel per click, and even within Shimano, the Linkglide range needs its own shifters. The right-hand shifter controls the rear derailleur; the left-hand one, when there is one, the front derailleur, in a two or three-chainring version. On a single-chainring mountain bike, the left-hand shifter disappears, and the space freed up often takes the dropper post remote.

On the handlebar or on the brake lever?

The conventional mounting is a clamp tightened around the 22.2 mm handlebar, next to the brake lever. To save space and get a tidier cockpit, the two big manufacturers offer a way to mount the shifter directly on the brake lever: I-Spec at Shimano, whose EV version is compatible neither with I-Spec II nor with I-Spec B, and MatchMaker X at Sram, a single clamp that carries the brake, shifter and remote. These mounts do not mix between brands: check the one on your brakes before ordering.

Cables, derailleur and related parts

A new shifter will only give crisp gear changes with clean, properly cut MTB gear cables and housing. Choose it together with its MTB derailleur; the MTB drivetrain section gathers the other parts. For a road handlebar, road bike shifters combine braking and shifting in a single lever.

Which MTB shifter brands to choose?

Shimano offers its Rapidfire Plus shifters from Tourney to XTR; the 12-speed Deore XT and XTR shift several gears at once and come with a clamp or in I-Spec EV.

Sram, born in Chicago around a twist shifter, still offers Grip Shift models, such as the 12-speed XX1 Eagle, alongside its Trigger shifters, from SX to XX1 Eagle, which can be fitted to the MatchMaker X clamp.

XLC, a German component brand, is present here with the Blaster SP-X08 lever, a machined handlebar remote for its dropper posts, which finds its place on the left of a single-chainring mountain bike.

Shifters from renewed ranges move to our MTB drivetrain clearance, and the latest arrivals are listed in new arrivals. Black Friday is also a good time to look.

Frequently asked questions

My shifter no longer changes gear: should I replace it?

Not necessarily. A frayed cable or dirty housing gives the same symptoms: replace them first. If the shifter still feels vague or no longer clicks after a cable change, its internal mechanism is worn or broken and it needs replacing.

Which shifter for a child's mountain bike?

A twist grip or a thumb lever needs little force and suits small hands. Check that the child can reach the control without letting go of the grip, and go for a simple drivetrain, often with a single chainring.

Do you need the same shifter on the left and the right?

No: the left-hand one controls the front derailleur and is chosen according to the number of chainrings, two or three. Shifters are often sold individually, so you can replace only the faulty side.

Can a road shifter be fitted to a mountain bike?

The brake and gear levers of a drop handlebar do not fit a flat bar. Some road groupsets offer shifters in a flat-bar version, but they only operate road derailleurs with the same number of speeds.

How do you know how many speeds your shifter has?

Look at the marking on the body or the gear indicator window, which often show it. Failing that, count the sprockets on the cassette: the right-hand shifter has the same number of positions.
