A pannier rack is chosen according to your frame and what you want to carry: at the rear for panniers, a top box or a child seat, at the front to keep a basket or a crate in view. Check your wheel size, the bike's mounting points and the permitted load, then the attachment system, MIK or Snapit, if you want to click your luggage on in one movement.

Front or rear: which pannier rack for which use?

  • The rear rack: the most versatile. It carries a pair of panniers, a double pannier, a top box or a child seat, and leaves the steering unaffected.
  • The front platform rack: fixed to the fork, it takes a basket, a crate or a strapped-down bag that you keep in sight, as on delivery bikes.
  • The front low-rider rack: it places two panniers on either side of the front wheel, at hub height, to balance a loaded touring bike.

On a road bike or a mountain bike without dedicated mounts, lighter models fit onto the seatpost or the wheel axle, for a more modest load.

How does a pannier rack attach to your bike?

Start by locating the threaded eyelets on the frame: at the bottom, near the rear wheel axle, and at the top, on the seatstays or under the saddle. A rack bolted to these four points is the sturdiest. Without eyelets, clamps on the seatstays, a seatpost fitting or wheel axle adaptors take over. At the front, racks attach to the fork, via the brake bridge, eyelets or clamps depending on the model, and some accept suspension forks.

Also note the wheel size, 26, 27.5 or 28-inch, printed on the tyre sidewall, the width of the tyre with its mudguards, and whether there is a disc brake, whose calliper requires offset struts. Racks for fat-tyre bikes have struts set wider apart.

Pannier rack weight limit: what the ISO 11243 standard says

The ISO 11243 standard sets the safety requirements and tests for bicycle luggage carriers, under static, dynamic and lateral loads. The maximum load is shown on the rack or in its instructions: it decides what you can carry. A front rack accepts far less than a rear rack fixed to the frame, and a seatpost-mounted model is limited to light loads.

For a child seat, the seat manufacturer requires a rack that complies with this standard and a minimum capacity, higher for junior seats: at Polisport, the Guppy Junior requires a rack rated for at least 38 kg.

MIK, MIK HD and Snapit systems

These click-on systems replace straps and bungee cords. With MIK, a pannier, basket or top box locks onto the rack platform or onto an adaptor plate added to a standard rack. The reinforced MIK HD version is designed for child seats: an MIK HD seat only fits an MIK HD rack. The Racktime Snapit system relies on a plate screwed under the luggage that clicks onto the brand's racks; an intermediate plate lets you use it on a conventional rack with round tubes.

Panniers and bike bags to go with it

Once the carrier is fitted, choose from our pannier bags, single, double or in pairs. A bike you would rather keep light can do without a rack: a saddle bag, tucked under the saddle, and a frame bag, slotted into the main triangle, carry the essentials, while handlebar bags keep your belongings within reach. Our bike bags section brings everything together.

Pannier rack brands

Polisport, a Portuguese maker of bike and motorbike accessories, offers lockable top boxes such as the E-Cargo or a model compatible with MIK, MIK HD and MIK 2.0, as well as a rear carrier designed for its child seats with CFS fitting.

Pelago, a bike maker from Helsinki, offers the Commuter front rack in aluminium, in sizes S, M and L, or in stainless steel, in M and L, the latter version accepting a higher load.

Basil offers the Portland, an aluminium front rack with raised edges, limited to 10 kg and designed for 26 to 28-inch wheels, as well as MIK plates that fit onto a standard rack.

Racktime, the brand of the German manufacturer Tubus, builds its racks around the Snapit 2.0 system: the Topit at the front, the Gleamit at the rear, and replacement plates for baskets and panniers.

Zefal offers the Raider front rack, which attaches to the fork with clamps and accepts suspension forks as well as disc brakes.

Pannier racks at reduced prices

An end-of-line rack does exactly the same job: these models are flagged in our bike bags clearance, and the most recent arrivals in new arrivals. Spring and the start of autumn are good times to kit out your everyday bike.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can a rear pannier rack carry?

The figure is shown on the rack or in its instructions. A rear model fixed to the frame eyelets commonly accepts 25 kg or more, a seatpost-mounted model much less. Also respect the limit of the pannier and that of the bike, load included.

Can you fit a pannier rack to a mountain bike?

Yes. On a hardtail with eyelets, a conventional rack will do, after checking compatibility with the disc brake. If it has no eyelets, a rack fixed to the seatpost or the wheel axle will do the job. On a full-suspension bike, the rear travel limits the options to seatpost-mounted models designed for this use.

Does a front rack make the steering heavier?

A little, because the load turns with the fork. Start with a light, centred load, keep heavy items low, and get used to manoeuvring at low speed before setting off fully loaded.

Can my e-bike take a pannier rack?

Many e-bikes come with one fitted as standard, sometimes with the battery housed underneath. Otherwise, check for eyelets and the space left by the motor and battery, and choose a model whose permitted load matches your use.

How do you fit a top box to a pannier rack?

On an MIK rack, a compatible top box clicks straight on. Otherwise, a universal plate screws onto the rack platform, and the top box locks onto it with a key. Check the platform width and the permitted load before you buy.
